The Programmer's Paradox

An old, oft repeated joke about the literal logic of programmers, still gets the Dude to smile.

The Dude has heard a million variants of the following joke.

How programmers think

True, they think the literal, of exactly what you said or asked. That comes from their long term habit of parsing the precise syntax of what you said, not what you meant.

Language, among people at least, is less precise, and more based on context, prior understanding, and the ability to deduce what was meant. Computers have no such "gap filling" capability (perhaps true AI will fix this), and thus programmers have learnt to be very precise.

Still, the Dude gets a good belly chuckle out of these... Even though they spelled Avocados wrong...
